Here, we're going to hack your wordpress engine by adding a little php codes. It takes only two easy steps, add the code to wp-comment-post.php and comment.php.
  1. Open your comments.php file in your theme directory, find the following codes <input name="submit" type="submit" id="submit" value=" " so on so forth (it might not be the same but won't be much different). Then add the following code after it:
    <?php if (!$user_ID) : ?>
    <?php $aaa=rand(0,5); $bbb=rand(3,9); ?><?php echo $aaa; ?>+<?php echo $bbb; ?>=
    <input type="text" name="subab" id="subab" size="2" tabindex="5" style="width:20px" /><?php if ($req) _e('(Are You Human!)'); ?>
    <input name="aaa" value="<?php echo $aaa; ?>" type="hidden" />
    <input name="bbb" value="<?php echo $bbb; ?>" type="hidden" />
    <?php endif; ?>

    Well, it's quite fine to scarry commenters (human) and intimidate them to fill the answer of the quiz. But actually the function will not work properly, even if commenters put the wrong answer, the comments would still trash your blog. Hicks...
  2. Now, in order to work properly open wp-comments-post.php file in your blog root directory. Find this code:
    if ( '' == $comment_content )
    wp_die( __('Error: please type a comment.') );
    Copy the code below and put it right after it, you're done.
    //Math Challenge anti spam Start
    if ( !$user->ID ) {
    $aaa = trim($_POST[aaa]);
    $bbb = trim($_POST[bbb]);
    $subab = trim($_POST[subab]);
    if((($aaa+$bbb)!=$subab)|| empty($subab)){
    wp_die( __('Sorry, wrong answer. Please go back and try again!') );
    }
    }
    //Math Challenge anti spam End
    The function of the second code is to verify the answer of math question created earlier. In case commenters forgot or gave the wrong answer, wordpress will block comments untill the math question correctly answered.
You may also change the error message with your own word, change this "Sorry, wrong answer. Please go back and try again! and replace it to your liking.
Well, it's easy, right? Another unique benefit of this anti spam is the math question will not ask administrator (in logged on mode) to solve a question, it will appears and give the math question only to your visitor. Functions and How to Create Correct Robots.txt

2

What is robots.txt? Robots.txt (remember, always plural!) is actually just a plain .txt (text) file that usually placed in root of a blog or website. Its function is to limit or block search engine spiders / robots from crawling certain files of a website, or in simple robots.txt tells the spiders/ bots which files are allowed to be crawled and which files are not. Is it important to have robots.txt for website / blog? The answer is absolutely yes, the access limitation from robots.txt instructs the search engine bots to access and crawl only the important files or files that should not be shown for public.
It's just hard to imagine if you have thousands of files on your website and you let the spiders crawl it one by one. While we know that some files such as .php, javascripts .css', .inc are not important to be crawled. So, by adding the robots.txt files on your website root, the spiders from search engine will be more focus to crawl only the important files of your website.
The principal rules of Robots.txt is to dissalow spider from crawling, because search engine robots basic task is to crawl (all files) unless they are not allowed to. This is where we need to have robots.txt file to be exist on our site. How to create a correct robots.txt syntax? Below are examples and brief explanation of robots.txt rules:

To dissalow all robots
User-agent: *
Disallow: /
Note: the "*" (wildcard) sign represents all user agents (google, bing, yandex, etc). And the "/" (slash) means your website root directory.

To allow all robots
User-agent: *
Disallow:
Note : Since after the Dissalow parameter is left empty (blank), it means user agent will have a full access to your site, in other word "Dissalow : none". Or if you are sure to let the spiders crawl your site entirely, you can create an empty robots.txt files or barely not to create one (not recommended).

To allow only one robots (one user agent only)
User-agent: Googlebot
Disallow:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /

To disallow some directory and files (recommended)
User-agent: *
Disallow: /cgi-bin/
Disallow: /tmp/
Disallow: /wp-admin/
Disallow: /wp-includes/
As I explained earlier, it is very important to limit spider crawl by creating robots.txt on our site root. I meself decided to limit some unnecessary directoreis and files on my wordpress site, here is my robots.txt:
User-agent: Googlebot
Disallow: /*.php$
Disallow: /*.js$
Disallow: /*.inc$
Disallow: /*.css$
Disallow: /*.swf$
Disallow: /*.zip$
Disallow: /*?*
Disallow: /*?

User-agent: *
Disallow: /cgi-bin/
Disallow: /wp-admin/
Disallow: /wp-includes/
Disallow: /wp-content/plugins/
Disallow: /wp-content/cache/
Disallow: /wp-content/themes/
Disallow: /wp-login.php
Disallow: /wp-register.php
Disallow: /trackback/
Disallow: /feed/
Disallow: /author/
Disallow: /comments/

That is example of correct robots.txt file for wordpres. If you want to create the same robots.txt rules for your blog, you can copy mine. Just create a plain text file named robots.txt, put the code and upload to your site root directory. Tho check whether your robots.txt syntax is correct and valid, you can check it here. Well, have a try and Good Luck!

2 Optional Ways to Add Expire Header in .htacces and Meta Tags

0

Still talking about improving page speed for website/ blog, previously I wrote about Leverage Browser Cache on .htacces and to make our blog load faster and faster we can add and set future expire header in .htacces or optionally in html meta tags. The principal differences of both are, Leverage Browser Cache only tells the browser to recollect the cached files while setting future expire header (Expire Caching) tells how long the files should be cached. For static files such as images, css' and javascripts that relatively unchanged we can instruct the browser not to download the same file in the future. The longer future expire cache is set, the better you get.
Adding Expire Header (Expire Caching) can be done easily in two ways, by adding it on .htacces and optionally set the meta tag or cache control in html header.

Add Expire Header in .htaccess

To define how long the static files should be cached, you can add the following codes to .htacces file on your site root:

## EXPIRES CACHING ##
<IfModule mod_expires.c>
ExpiresActive OnExpiresByType image/jpg "access 1 year"
ExpiresByType image/jpeg "access 1 year"
ExpiresByType image/gif "access 1 year"
ExpiresByType image/png "access 1 year"
ExpiresByType text/css "access 1 month"
ExpiresByType application/pdf "access 1 month"
ExpiresByType text/x-javascript "access 1 month"
ExpiresByType application/x-shockwave-flash "access 1 month"
ExpiresByType image/x-icon "access 1 year"
ExpiresDefault "access 29 days"
</IfModule>

## EXPIRES CACHING ##

I set the default future expires cache in 29 days or a month. This parameter can be changed as long as you need. For active sites that relatively dynamic, you may set to shorter period but if you are sure your files are really static, then the longer the better.

Set Future Expire Caching in hmtl Meta Tags

You can set the Future Expire Caching in hmtl Meta Tags manually and need to update for certain time. But for some sites, this way is more effective and applicable. Add the following codes and define the parameter to your need:
<meta http-equiv="expires" content="tue, 01 jan 2013 19:30:00 GMT">

How to Set Correct Leverage Browser Caching on .htacces

0

If every internet users deserve to get a fast web, then optimizing and improving the pagespeed of a site is webmasters' duty. I believe you are familiar with pagespeed and yslow, these two application has now become a reference and standard to measure quality and performance of a blog/ site. One way to improve your site pagespeed is to set the Leverage Browser Cache, it's the easiest way but significantly increase your site loading time few times faster.

Leverage Browser Cache is basically instructing the browser to re-leverage or recollect data that was downloaded earlier (which is stored in browser cache) so when you open another page from the same site you will not need to redownload the same files. By default, this caching function is already handled by browser automatically. But its process is not yet perfect, it can be interrupted by some factors like proxy changes, session time and so on. So by appending this leverage browser cache on .htacces file, it will make the browser cache function works better, as a result the page load will be faster.

If you are using W3 Total Cache plugin, the leverage browser cache functions is built in there, simply activate it to make it works. But for some users (including me) this plugin makes the server works harder and load much memory, so I decided not to use it, anymore. As a solution, I adapted this leverage browser cache function manually. Open the .htacces file on your site root, the add this code:

# BEGIN Browser Cache
<IfModule mod_deflate.c>
<IfModule mod_setenvif.c>
BrowserMatch ^Mozilla/4 gzip-only-text/html
BrowserMatch ^Mozilla/4\.0[678] no-gzip
BrowserMatch \bMSIE !no-gzip !gzip-only-text/html
BrowserMatch \bMSI[E] !no-gzip !gzip-only-text/html
</IfModule>
<IfModule mod_headers.c>
Header append Vary User-Agent env=!dont-vary
</IfModule>
AddOutputFilterByType DEFLATE text/css application/x-javascript text/html text/richtext image/svg+xml text/plain text/xsd text/xsl text/xml image/x-icon
</IfModule>
<FilesMatch "\.(css|js)$">
FileETag None
<IfModule mod_headers.c>
Header set X-Powered-By "DVS"
</IfModule>
</FilesMatch>
<FilesMatch "\.(html|htm|rtf|rtx|svg|svgz|txt|xsd|xsl|xml)$">
FileETag None
<IfModule mod_headers.c>
Header set X-Powered-By "DVS"
</IfModule>
</FilesMatch>
<FilesMatch"\.(asf|asx|wax|wmv|wmx|avi|bmp|class|divx|doc|docx|exe|gif|gz|gzip|ico|jpg|
jpeg|jpe|mdb|mid|midi|mov|qt|mp3|m4a|mp4|m4v|mpeg|mpg|mpe|mpp|odb|odc|odf|odg|
odp|ods|odt|ogg|pdf|png|pot|pps|ppt|ram|swf|tar|tif|tiff|wav|wma|wri|xla|xls|xlsx|xlt|xlw|zip)$">
FileETag None
<IfModule mod_headers.c>
Header set X-Powered-By "DVS"
</IfModule>
</FilesMatch>

# END Browser Cache

How to Create Automatic Post Excerpt (Teaser) without Plugin

2

By default some wordpress template does not support post teaser or post excerpt, this will cause post content shows entirely in front page or archives. This is not good since it never gets any positive point by search engine as well as creates bigger page source and make your blog loads slower. Besides, showing too many posts in front page will not help your SEO quality, you should limit number of posts to 5 per page with summary or teaser ideally.
If your template does not support teaser, normally you may use some post teaser plugins that offer "this and that" feature. But trust me, it won't help much. Better not to use it when you can easily create and customize it by yourself.
Unlike the previous tricks to reduce plugins use, Minify HTML, Javascript and CSS without Plugin where I utilize a real plugin that re-coded into functions.php file so it can works manually. This Automatic Post Excerpt or Post Teaser is actually a default feature that is already "built in" in wordpress. Unfortunately, most of new wordpress users don't realize it, they tend to choose an external plugin to get this excerpt. For your Information, these are codes that commonly used to call default function of wordpress engine, know them and utilize them well: :D
<?php the_content(); ?> : Used to call your blog Posts
<?php the_category( ' , ' ); ?> : Used to call content Category
<?php the_tags( ', ' ); ?> : Used to call content Tags
<?php wp_get_archives( 'type=monthly '); ?> : Used to call Monthly Archives
<?php comments_template(); ?> : Used to call Comment Form
There are lot more default codes for wordpress engine you can recognize easily, including code to call Excerpt / Teaser function, and here is the code:
<?php the_excerpt(); ?> or
<?php echo strip_tags(get_the_excerpt); ?>
Until here, I believe you can catch where this explanation goes to. Yep, to create Automatic Post Excerpt/ Teaser manually simply add the excerpt code to your template. But why did I say "Automatic"? Coz we will hack your theme, so whenever you open your blog (which was excerpt code added), all the posts will be excerpted automatically. Certainly it will really help you a lot, you don't have to create excerpt for every post, the excerpt will be handled automatically by theme.
In specific, open index.php and archive.php from your theme. Find the code <?php the_content(); ?> (code to call post entirely) replace with <?php the_excerpt(); ?> (code to call excerpt only). Here is the illustration:
Before:
<div class ="post_entry"><?php the_content(); ?></div>
After:
<div class ="post_entry"><?php the_excerpt(); ?></div>
By default, wordpress limits the characters count up to 55 words for every post excerpt. If you want to show more or lesser character or you may also change [...] sign, simply find formatting.php file in wp-includes folder then find this codes;
$excerpt_length = apply_filters('excerpt_length', 55);
$excerpt_more = apply_filters('excerpt_more', ' ' . '[...]');
Replace the number and the sign to your liking. Remember using too much post summary and post number in front page or archive won't help much in SEO perspective. 55 words is enough and you should limit number of posts to 5 per page. Another wordpress hack? Read also Page Navigation without Plugin or Creating Related Post by Tags/ Category Without Plugin. Have a try and Good Luck!
